For the past week, we’ve talked about identity and different things we as teenage girls misplace our identity in. This post will conclude the series, and it’s going to be about the only thing you should put your identity in; Jesus. In today’s society, it can be really easy to place our identity in many worldly things. However, you simply will not thrive if you do that. You were created by Christ. He loves you. He died for you. And He wants you to place your identity in Him. When you do that, and only when you do that, your identity will be stable. You won’t be wandering around lost. You’ll know who you are; I can promise you that. But don’t just take my word for it. Try it yourself. Use these five scriptures to help you take your identity out of your appearance, popularity, relationships, and talents and place them in Christ.
1. John 1:12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. You are a child of God. God Himself gave you that title when you received Him. The second you accept Christ as your Lord and Savior, you become His child. You’re no longer lost. You are now found in Christ. 2. John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. I absolutely cannot wrap my head around this scripture. Jesus chose me. He chose you. Us. Sinners. Unbelievers. But He still chose us. Jesus wants us. And not only does He want us, but He’s promising that whatever we ask for in faith, God will give it to us. That blows my mind. 3. Romans 6:6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. We’re no longer slaves to sin. We’re no longer bound by our mistakes or our past. Our sinful bodies were done away with so that we can have new bodies found in Christ. 4. Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. This scripture tells us exactly what we are. Known. Set apart. Appointed. Prophets. This is who God created us to be. In fact, He planned for us to be those things before we were born. Before we were even formed, God created our identity. 5. John 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. We are Jesus’ friends. He tells us Himself in the above scripture. That’s where our identity lies; in our friendship with Christ. That’s an amazing thought to me—the King of the universe choosing us to be His friends. We’re not servants of Jesus; we can now have a personal relationship with Him. Placing your identity in worldly things can and will be totally detrimental to your spiritual life. Because the unspoken part of that is this: by placing your identity in something other than Christ means placing that thing in the “god” position in your life. And the only thing that belongs in that position is God Himself. Our identity is found in Christ alone. Not our beauty, boyfriend, best friend, or talents. Everything in the world will pass away. Everything that is so important to us now will be unimportant when we're in heaven. Put God back in His rightful place by placing your identity in Him.
